Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian: Sunset, Sunrise was published on the occasion of the artist's first major solo exhibition in Ireland and Sharjah Art Foundation. Combining diverse material from multiple sources, such as poetry, conversations, commentary, archival photographs and paper drawings to provide a poetic yet comprehensive overview of the artist and her output. Both the exhibition and publication highlight the artist’s drawings in felt marker and pen on paper that trace structures of nomadic tents, minarets and models of architectural sculptures.
The publication’s design is inspired by the artist’s signature geometric motifs – dodecagon, single point, square, pentagon and hexagon – which are inspired by Islamic geometry and symbolism dating back to the sixteenth century Iran. It includes contributions from Rahel Aima, Tina Kinsella, Caoimhín Mac Giolla Léith, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Murtaza Vali, as well as poetry by Michael Davitt, Rumi and Sohrab Sepehri. The texts reflect on Farmanfarmaian’s intricate drawings, kaleidoscopic mirror mosaics and her decades-long career.
